PHIL 3140: Solving Other People's Problems
Summer I 2025
Tuesday/Thursday 9-11:30
Some ethical questions are so tricky they require anonymity.
"Should I break off contact with my father now that he's dating my high school bully?"
"As a white man, can I date a woman of color to advance my anti-racism?"
"My grandma has dementia. Should I help her vote?"
This course takes inspiration from the question-and-answer format of advice columns like The Ethicist and online forums that bring together advice-seekers and frustrated moral philosophers (r/AITA).
As a class, we’ll be putting out a call to the broader Kalamazoo community inviting the anonymous submission of the trickiest personal and ethical challenges facing our community. We’ll be drawing on the rich history of the philosophical tradition to provide answers.
