Solving Other People's Problems & Everyday Ethics
In 2025, I developed an introductory ethics class called "Solving Other People's Problems." The class was modeled on the question-and-answer format of the advice column.
Over the summer, my class partnered with NowKalamazoo, a non-profit local news service, which publishes a daily newsletter. Together we solicited the submission of anonymous ethical problems from the broader community and published our class responses under the "Everyday Ethics" banner.
As a class, we published four columns addressing both interpersonal and civic issues. The most common ethical problems concerning the broader community related to homelessness. You can read our reflection on the ethics of giving money directly to panhandlers vs. charitable organizations here.
